THE CHILDREN OF MEN by P.D. James (No children.
No future. No hope.)
P.D. James writes of an England in 2021, where human
infertility has spread like wildfire through the land. By now no babies have
been born for a quarter of a century. The old are driven to suicide and
despair, the young are beautiful and cruel, and the middle aged are struggling
to exist under the dictatorship of Xan Lyppiatt, Warden of England. It is a
frightening yet convincing scenario.
Theodore Faron, an Oxford historian and Xan's cousin,
becomes involved despite himself with a small group who seek to challenge the
power of the Warden's regime. He is drawn into horrific adventures, demanding a
confrontation with his inner self and desperate resolution.
The book has now been made into a
major film
starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine to name but a few and
is set in 2027. Directed by Alfonso Cuaron. |
